Rigid Wheelchairs: Clinical Implications for Configuration

Full-time wheelchair users going through the process of choosing a rigid ultralight wheelchair have several options to consider in order to accommodate their postural and functional needs. These needs include stability, postural alignment, decreased shoulder load, and maneuverability. Considerations for the wheelchair frame include overall weight, seat-to-back angle, back height, axle placement, front end shape, foot supports, and seat slope. There are numerous components to decide on, such as wheels, tires, casters, forks, shocks absorbers, handrims, and wheel locks. This presentation will include research and clinical findings as well as user input outlining the critical reasoning for specific wheelchair configurations.
